You may be having troubles with your device drivers, firmware, and/or software. Go to Device Manager by going to start / search box and type device manager and enter and then double-click on the program icon that appears. Check each device for a red x, yellow ! or white ?. The adapter is inside the laptop. You don't need to do anything with it to install it. Installing the drivers, firmware, and/or software for it and your version of Vista from Dell (whatever applies) will 'install' it. You then need to go to Start / Control Panel / Network and Sharing Center and configure the adapter with the proper settings and establish the appropriate network connections. Some of this will be from settings required by your ISP and perhaps your router or modem (so you may need to contact them if you don't know the settings).
