Garage plans and designs are incomplete without a list of materials for the project. The materials list is critical for planning, organization and ordering. The traditional building method for a residential garage begins with balloon framing, also called stick-built by most carpenters. To determine the materials needed, start with the building's dimensions, framed 16 inches on center. Local building codes define nailing patterns, which can help you calculate the number of nails and other special requirements for your project. Start with an accurate materials list and your garage project -- even if you've contracted it -- will go smoothly and without any surprises.

Ground Floor

Concrete starts the materials list off, sized by the garage dimensions and a typical 4-inch slab. But before concrete is poured, residential garages typically require rebar or steel mesh integrated into the pad. Many building jurisdictions also call for a plastic vapor barrier beneath the concrete based on specific soil types. If you plan stem walls in your garage so you can wash it out with a hose, include the amount of concrete brick needed for one course around the perimeter of the garage and the bolts that secure the sole plate to them for framing.

Framing the Garage

The majority of wall framing entails two-by-four studs, and a few two-by-sixes, as needed. Depending on the wall height, the studs can range from 96-inches to 120-inches or more. Along with studs, don't forget base or sole plates and top plates to secure the studs to create the walls. If you plan windows and doors for the garage, include two-by-twelve headers above doors and windows. But for the main overhead metal garage door, check local code requirements, as this header usually must be an engineered laminated beam that can span the distance. Don't forget to add metal earthquake straps, drywall, batt insulation, wiring, outlets and lighting fixtures for a finished garage.

Exterior Sheathing

Exterior wall sheathing made from 5/8-inch thick, 4-by-8 feet sheets of oriented strand board follows next, covered by some type of vapor barrier such as sheathing paper or polyethylene plastic. For soffits and fascia, include 3/4-inch cedar and vented aluminum screens on the list. When planning your garage, match its exterior to your home's exterior, such as stucco, vinyl or wood -- shiplap or tongue and groove -- siding, amounts calculated as per the garage dimensions.

Over the Head

Prebuilt engineered roof trusses work best for the roof support. Framed roof trusses -- triangular shaped for the roof pitch -- use two-by-four lumber secured at joints with metal plates. Frame-style trusses sit much closer together on the outside walls, requiring more time to install. It's possible to build trusses on site but prebuilt engineered trusses have greater strength and integrity compared with site-built trusses. Prebuilt engineered trusses require a boom truck or crane to lift them atop the walls and to stabilize them during installation, usually provided by the company who made the trusses. Add plywood roof decking, felt or tar paper, caulk, shingles or corrugated metal to the list to complete the roof.

Fasteners and Other Items

The two most common sizes of nails are 8d and 16d coated sinker nails. Use these for the bulk of the framing. Roofing nails are also essential. Depending on roof type they range from 1-to-1 1/2-inches in length. Purchase nails in 25-pound bulk sizes to save money. An assortment of flashing is also needed to seal joints around the roof, doors and windows. Flashing consists of angled strips of metal to discourage water penetration. Other weather-related items include caulking, paint and gutters.
